Bell Gardens runners qualify for CIF

This years Bell Gardens High School track team sprinted themselves to success, while being challenged all year from difficult foes in the Almont League. With a team full of great athletes, the varsity Boys and Girls team qualified for the C.I.F. playoffs, having most of their top runners win Almont League accolades.

The team trained and conditioned exceptionally hard to become successful. All their hard work paid off as they accomplished their goal with great ease; practicing after school and pushing themselves to greater limits separated the runners from the rest of the field.

Flying her way through the league meets, Sophomore Shawnta Barnes, yet again, set newer and higher standards for next years competitors, breaking three new league records: the 100, 200 meter, and long jump league records.

"I was excited when I heard that I had broken three league records," states Barnes.

Other girl finalists were Junior Jackie Mendoza, Sophomores Bernice Flores, Mallorie Hopkins, and Freshman Bennique Savannah.

The boy’s varsity team had a great end with finalists consisting of Seniors Mario Granville, Jeson Schlup, and Carlos Walker, Juniors Cesar Estrada, Sergio Lopez, and Frank Amezcua.

Astonishing everyone with the results of Friday’s track meet, the track team succeeded their expectations by defeating their number one rivals Montebello and Schurr High School.

Granville comments, "It was quite intriguing and I enjoyed every moment of the meet."

Head Coach Manny Sanchez looks forward to next year and thanks everyone for their support, "[I just want to] thank everyone for coming out and supporting the track family, and hope to see all of the seniors continuing to run."
